The building is located in the area of Anavyssos, Attika on a steeply sloping, south- oriented plot with panoramic views to the Saronic gulf. Thesefactshavealsodeterminedourdesignprinciples. The basic architectural concept originated not only from the need to protect the buildings from the intense solar radiation (due to the south solarization), but also from the desire to build two residences constituting a unified whole, nevertheless without loosing their independent character. Alongthe south, east and west front of each building we placed a metallic construction, in order to support both the verandas and the sun protection construction. This construction unifies both residences, since it serves as a second façade, offering the necessary sun protection for both buildings. The tents can be adjusted to the sun and wind intensity automatically – or manually, transforming, thus, continuously not only the main façade, but also the quality of the spaces in between. The buildings were placed at a distance from the main retaining wall. The created gap was filled with an open-air car park, whereas an outdoor passageway was placed at the upper level. This open-air aisle leads to the main house entrances through two metal bridges. The car park top construction is made out of a metal mesh, providing not only a luminous “underground” car park and storage space, but also natural ventilation for the basement level. Due to the steep inclination of the plot and in order to avoid high retaining walls, a big part of the south-side open-air spaces was constructed on a cantilevered overhang, supported by the rear retaining stonewalls. Both the retaining walls, as well as the south front of the basement level of both buildings have been built with stone – product of the excavation –, in order to blend with the landscape and enhance the weightlessness of the structural steelwork.
